~A Day at Home~

I might call this a sick day? But, the jury is still out on that one. I woke up this morning to my stomach making a loud gurgling noise, mainly in my intestinal region. It was kind of funny how it seemed to be taking part of the morning conversation at the breakfast table this a.m. between my mother and I. However, it bugged me nonetheless as my stomach does not make those kinds of loud gurgling noises on a regular basis if at all. As I've stated before, with MS, things are generally stalled in that area for a few days before my digestive track decides to cut me a break.

We had someone else call out of work today complaining of being in and out of the bathroom all night. I may have been overreacting when I called para-transit at the last minute upon the loud noises I heard coming from my own stomach, and decided to cancel this mornings trip to work. But, I'm still learning how things impact this body with lower extremities that have partial to no sensation at any given moment.

In short, folks the the last thing I want is to have an intestinal bug traveling through these intestines that are partially numb and can't sense urges readily and be away from a bathroom. I've had a couple of trips to the bathroom already. I'm not nauseous, which is good and just mild gurgling from time to time. Nothing monumental like this morning, but I'm still glad I remained on the safe side. On the upside, perhaps in me intestinal upsets work the opposite. It is kind of tough to get that region to wake up over anything, LOL. Blessing or a curse of MS? As with most things I suppose it depends of perspective :-)

Enough of that talk!

So, what do I do for calorie/exercise and food wise on days like these? There's a few different options depending on one's ailment. To error on the side of safety, I won't be doing weight lifting today. However, I only had weight lifting and yoga scheduled for this week. So, it will be okay to schedule weights for tomorrow and yoga for Thursday.

What about calories? Well, I'm not going to be to be moving around much today so I actually revert to my basal metabolic cals, which are about 1220. In this way, I'm ensuring cals ingested are going to equate to the approximate activity I'll be getting in. On those occasions it's a full blown stomach flu, I can barely getting in my BMR cals in. Y'all know how that is...

But, what if it's a cold or flu and not stomach related? Well, folks as sadistic as it seems I still work out if my colds or flu's are above the neck. It's actually not as bad as it seems. I feel better afterwards, and 10 times out of 10 the cold or flu lasts a lot less longer. In short, I'm still able to eat my usual cals for those kinds of ailments.

One of the things this whole process has taught me is how freeing it is to give up the all or nothing thinking I once had. Just because things are not going as planned, does not mean they are a'wash. And, even if things go a'wash, it's simply an opportunity to reassemble the pieces in a different way that may create another picture outside the one originally painted in our heads, but no less reasonable or workable than the original. And, just as essential is still a step towards serving one's goals.

I'm not sure, but I think they refer to this approach as "adaptation" :-)
