~My conditioned mind's Myths & Fallacies~

This list is really for this girl than anyone else. If some have not already noted, this mind likes to ponder and reflect about a lot of things. But, one thing I have been thinking about is the shift in paradigm and perception. Things are happening that completely blow preconceptions I had about weight loss and healthy approaches to living. I don't know that understanding these things in the past would have changed anything, but knowing them now certainly does and that is what counts. So, let's get started. What have been some myths that I've been carrying around for years.

1. If I gain 4lbs in one night, it has to be "fat" or because of something I splurged on.
Truth: upping my water intake to 3-4 liters of water a day and lots of trips to the bathroom pretty much blew that myth out of the ball park.

2. You can't lose weight using resistance or strength training w/intermittent cardio.
Truth: A 14 lb loss later made dust out of that one.

3. When you lose inches, you lose everywhere
Truth: This last weekend taught me, that with every inch of fat lost, there will be some inches gained in muscle & it will show up when you measure - it's o-k-a-y

4. I have to work out 4 hours a day in order to lose weight through exercise
Truth: 1 hour sacrificed 5 days a week

5. If I fast everyday, my body will slip into starvation mode and I won't be able to lose.
Truth: I've been doing a 16:8 intermittent fast almost everyday since day 1

6. There is no correlation between good sleep and effective exercise
Truth: My greatest drops in weight were on those nights I went to bed early and got more than 8 hours of sleep.

7. Losing weight is a linear process with no ups and down if calculated correctly.
Truth: LOL...LOL...ROFL- Just take a look at my weight loss chart

8. If I follow CICO - I don't need to do any research
Truth: If any kind of targeted exercise is being done, research is imperative to make sure what you're doing is effective and correct, at the very least in order to AVOID INJURY.

9. I'll F-up my joints even more if I do strength and resistance training
Truth: See #8

10. As a birder, if I start a diet and exercise program, I won't be able to spend as much time with my backyard birds or observing my favorite Raptors.
Truth: I actually have more time than I did before (for whatever reason) and spent a lovely afternoon with some goldfinches, hummers, house sparrows, house finches, tree swallows, and cowbirds last Sunday. And, a condo has already been chosen for next winters vacation at the lake for Eagle watching. In addition, a birding expedition has already been planned for the end of May.

Isn't it great to put those myths to bed on your own!? 👍🏻

Great insights. Sounds like you've got it sorted out. Good job. So much dogma out there.

Thank you my friends - it's funny because it's not as if there wasn't something inside that didn't question the validity of some of these myths. But, it's like it didn't matter because so many of these myths still run rampant out there and it isn't until you start challenging them or stepping outside the box, that you really begin to see the "forest for the trees" so to speak or as we say in the birding world, "hop on another perch and try taking a different perspective."

Keep your list open-ended for edits and additions. As you lose more weight, you may find that what worked before no longer works as well, or your body adapts to the way you feed it and exercise it. I've witnessed quite a few members get stuck 30+ pounds away from their optimum weight, and they scratch their heads trying to figure out what's wrong all of the sudden.

Agree with Soon.

Absolutely agree, Soon. And, I do contemplate that often. Exercise is by no means is a panacea for fat loss or weight loss, or good health for that matter. And, along this journey everyone at some point will have to contemplate what's essential or a priority in terms of how they define what being "healthy" looks like to them.
