SPRING RECOMP 2021 - DAY 3

DOMS in full effect. Almost fell down the stairs! Haven't had this shit in so long I forgot about it. I only get it immediately after a layoff.

Persisted through morning mobility and feel better, but still can't imagine doing front squats in a few hours when it hurts to walk now. This is, of course, nonsense. As John Broz says, "how you feel is a lie." Word.

Baselined back yesterday. Worked my row up to a couple plates, strict and fluid, so better than expected. Got one wide grip bodyweight pull up. Sad indeed. Pretty sure that will take a jump when I get on a normal bar. Skipped my shoulder hang due to bar unavailability. Also restarted ab work.

Anybody else get ab spasms? I get these bizarre, painful upper ab cramp/spasms where one muscle pulses and contracts so hard it looks like it's going to explode out of my body. They stretch right out, but tend to persist once they start.

The good news on diet is that I am tracking every morsel and building around a core of steak, chicken, and yams. The less terrific news is that I have logged 11,700 calories in the last 3 days, and it's been going up every day. Haven't gone balls out crazy, just a couple grilled cheese here, a pint of chunky monkey there, and the next thing you know, 4,000! Obviously not a sustainable program.

Feel great! Looking better in the mirror with a little glycogen on board and a few extra pounds. Waist is a slop show, especially once the compression shorts go on, but we knew there were some leftovers from the cut.

Sleeping early and often. Up before dawn with no alarm and ready to go. Practice, family logistics, work, and then to the gym early afternoon. Post lift steak and yams. Little nap. Pretense of additional productive work. Calling it a day around 5/6. Been falling asleep over book/movie in the evening. Then up again for a bit before lights out around 10. All in, I have been sleeping maybe 10+. Fasting insomnia is a distant memory.

Two more days of lift baselining, then will commence tracking and posting. Front squat and press today, deads and chins tomorrow.

Let's go!

I get spasms all the time either in my abs or my legs. If I move in bed I get spasms. Its worse when I try to do my workouts.

When you get spasms you might also consider where you stand on your potassium intake.

I get ab spasms when i bend a particular way and it’s nuts. I have no idea what it looks like because I’m trying to calm that muscle. Doc says nothing wrong with me, don’t bend that way. Earth-shattering advice there. Morgan, you may be dehydrated or have an electrolyte imbalance. Try more water and a 1/2 banana.

@all Heard on the electrolytes. I keep a jar of salt stick in my gym bag.

Also one 5.5 oz can of REGULAR v-8 juice and a 5 oz. can of LOW SODIUM v- 8 juice. One has lots of sodium and the other lots of potassium. Electrolyte imbalance is real.

MAGNESIUM tablets will relieve muscle tightness, help with sleep and sometimes with poo.

@HCB Good call on the magnesium. Now that I think about it, isn't that the whole deal with an epsom salt bath, magnesium absorbed through the skin?

@Kenna. Understood. The saltstick has potassium and magnesium in addition to the sodium. Product names a bit of a misnomer.

Good to know. Check to see how much sodium and potassium the salt stick has compared to the LOW SODIUM V-8 Juice. And the REGULAR. I am not familiar with your product, but the electrolytes in V-8 don’t require digestion. Very quickly available .

I did check on the saltstick tablets. The ones I saw were sold at Walmart and had 55 mg potassium VS about 800 mg in a 5.5 oz. can of low sodium V8. A drop in the bucket for someone who is actually dealing with electrolyte issues. Not to mention $25 for a bag of 100 VS maybe 30 cents for a can of V8. Sodium content wasn’t any better.
