The first couple days of February haven't been all that good. I bought a pizza and ate it for 3 days. So much for my low fat diet. But am getting back on track.

Took my cat to the vet (which is why I ordered the pizza, it's right by the vet's office) and found out he has diabetes. Blood sugar is 475 and it's supposed to be under 170. So I went in yesterday to learn how to give him an insulin shot. It's stressful. I'm so afraid I'll do it wrong. The technician was showing me what not to do. I gave him his 2nd shot this morning and have to give him another at 5pm. I've never expected to have 2 sick cats at the same time and the vet bills get really expensive. I take Callie in tomorrow (she has lymphoma) to be weighed and see about get some pain meds. Cats tolerate pain very well so it's hard to tell if they are in pain. But I think she is at times.

Hope the anxiety doesn't cause me to stress eat. Other than the pizza I think I should do okay, there is nothing bad in the house to eat.

Happy February. So sorry about the cat. That is a bummer. I am not sure how you get the cat to sit still for shots.

They get used to it. I did two years of subcutaneous fluids with one cat. It's all about making it a calm ritual. Pets, shot, reward, pets. Plus, the insulin needles are nothing compared to fluid. She'll also associate it with feeling better. as far as the pain meds, don't project your feelings onto her. If she's acting mostly herself, but slower, that may be par for the course with her lymphoma. If her behavior is changing or erratic, then I'd ask about them. and since you're in California, consider pet CBDs, but only from a reputable source. vet will likely prescribe tramadol (opioid) which can cause constipation and other gut issues which are hard on an older cat.

Thanks Liv. He doesn't notice the shot (so far it's only been 2 shots). I gave the shot this morning while he was eating. Thanks Sunnyingrid and Draglist. Thanks Katsolo - so far Marco doesn't have an issue with the shots. Hope he doesn't notice them. Callie, the cat with lymphoma - I can tell when she is hurting. When I first adopted her she had to have all her teeth removed due to stomatitis and has had problems with pain on and off. And I'll my vet figure out how to deal with the pain. I can't give her anything by mouth, but I've some medicine for her upset stomach that I rub in her ear and she likes that. My vet said there might be something like that for pain. I have never had 2 sick cats at the same time. I don't know how I'll ever get back to Mendocino with a cat needing insulin shots twice a day.

Some of my vet techs also pet sit on the side for favorite clients. That's how you can leave and know the injections will get taken care of. Or an in home pet sitter that knows how (not my preference, I like keeping my animals at their home) to give injections. I know who I trust, but I've also been going to the same vet since I moved here.

I went through cat diabetes shots for 2 1/2 years. Learned how to take my cat's blood sugar by pricking the vein that outlines the inner ears. It helps a lot to talk to others going through the same thing. I can't remember the board I was on as it has been 20 years, but here is one: felinediabetes.com My cat eventually developed kidney failure and had to be given sub-cutaneous fluids every day. He put up with all of it, including daily pilling. I guess he was so good about it because he knew it made him feel better.

That is a pain to have to administer shots! My parents have to do that with one of their dogs but you will find a way to work it out. Makes me so sad your kitty has lymphoma but they are lucky to have you!!! Hang in there! It takes time you adapt but you will!

Katsolo - I like keeping my cats at home when I leave for a few days. I have a lady that comes in every day to feed them and scoop the litter boxes for me. $10 a visit. A couple of times I had her come twice a day, but once is usually enough. My sister, who lives just a couple blocks away said she would do the shots for me if I want to go to the coast if I can teach her how to do it. Josie - so far Marco doesn't even notice the shot. I give him the shot as he is eating. He is always so hungy. Thanks Kclab. Bearnoggin - the vet said the shots may not be necessary forever. Unlike dogs, the diabetes isn't necessarily for life. Crossing my fingers. The vet said today that Callie is declining. She'd been doing good since she was diagnosed in March and has done much better than expected. She got a steroid shot that always helps her and the vet is going to order me some pain medication that I can rub in her ear - I can't give her anything by mouth. I appreciate the support! Haven't been stress eating the last 2 days, which is better than normal for me.

I'm sorry Callie isn't doing as well. It would be so great if you don't have to do those shots forever for your other baby! I didn't realize that it might not be forever. Good thing that it's been easy to administer so far. Also its very nice you can have someone help out, and good job on not stress eating!!! That's something to be proud of!!!
