My grand daughter decided she didn't want to come over and learn to cook. Oh well. She will be sorry when I die and nobody knows how to make my cousin Brenda's Spinach Dip! She's 12, but she's a teenager in all respects. Would rather be listening to music, or texting her friends, or watching YouTube videos than spending time with family.

My husband made the 7-Cup Salad this morning. It's only 80 calories for 1/2 cup of it. Looking forward to having some of that tonight when the marshmallows are all softened up.

OK, I've got chicken that needs to be put in the crock pot, butter beans that need to be put in the InstantPot, and Pecan Dreams and Spinach Dip that aren't going to make themselves!

My mother in law is texting negative for Covid now, so she will be able to be with us for Christmas Eve, PTL. My son and his wife will wear masks, since she has to have surgery on 1/6 and can't take a chance on getting sick before then. We're temporarily tightening up on Covid restrictions at church right now - no hugging, and wearing masks.

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday. Take a moment to remember "The Reason for the Season" - Jesus Christ was born to save us all from our sins so we can spend eternity with Him in Heaven. Now THAT's worth celebrating!

So sad she doesn't want to cook! One of the things I'm most grateful to my mother was that she taught me. Saved my bacon when I was a college student and was able to pull together reasonably healthy meals (not ramen) on a limited budget. Like you, taking extra pre-holiday precautions. Hoping for a virus-free Christmas for all my FS friends! 🤞

Give your Granddaughter some time. She may be going through a phase & at some point realize she really does want to learn to cook these special family recipes with you.

Perhaps it would be more helpful if you taught her a healthier dish? I've hosted Thanksgiving before and had to learn how to roast a turkey from YouTube, since I never learned it from my mother. Even some basic knife skills are great, and when she visits next time you could put her to work in chopping vegetables. If she's a preteen she's likely becoming weight and diet conscious, and would probably appreciate lower calorie options at your home. 🤔

@JustBananas I wish my mom had showed me cooking skills. But our house was small and my parents are hoarders. So there wasn't space to be a spectator in the kitchen

I'm all about family traditions. Certain things (sights, smells, tastes) can trigger great memories from decades ago. I wish somebody had insisted that Nanny Woods teach them how to make her amazing yeast rolls. I was fortunate enough to learn how to make my Mom's Chicken 'n Dumplins (which my Granny taught her to make). Some things, you have to be shown how to do - like how to slide each individual dumplin (strips, not blobs) into a boiling spot in the broth until it pulls itself into the water. I've taught my son how to make them. This year, I was going to have my MIL show me how to make her Potato Salad and the Christmas Wreath (like a giant wreath-shaped cinnamon roll, only better!) but she got Covid and we're just hoping she will feel well enough to be with us on Saturday. Hopefully, there will be a next year with her. The potato salad is something that there is no written recipe for, so it has to be shown. The wreath HAS directions, but I still don't understand from reading them how to cut each piece and fold it over the last one to make it turn out beautiful.

I do hope you had your tongue in cheek when you played the 'you'll be sorry when I'm dead' card. I can't always tell when people are joking. I had a baked spinach and cream cheese dip at a party the other day. Very rich, I feel like it had condensed cream in it. I have never had it before. Merry Christmas. I hope you have a wonderful day with your entire family.

Hi Debbie. Please share your Chicken and Dumpling recipe. It is as my Grandmother made it. My DIL uses canned biscuits for dumplings even though the strips of dough are in the freezer section. I was always left out of cooking sessions with Grandmother.

If passing on the recipes is so important to you, why not create a family cookbook? Have your husband take pictures of the step-by-step prep work when it's too difficult to describe in words. You can have the whole thing printed off and bound at Staples, FedEx Office, or Office Depot. Next Thanksgiving or Christmas you can gift everyone copies.

We have a family cookbook my sister put together, complete with not only the recipes, but also photos of family gatherings through the years. Something I treasure. The funny thing is, my mom's whole theory of cooking was "so it looks right," and many of our recipes are a little vague ;-)

I can imagine how sad you were that she didn’t want to cook with you. At that age I guess. Everything sounds wonderful. Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy family time.

write it down, perhaps she will want to learn later in life. 12 is such a hard age.... especially for girls

Give your granddaughter time, she'll come around. Perhaps next year you can tell her you need some help, that might move her to cook with you. I always loved being with my grandmother, would stay for weeks at a time during the summer. Great memories!
