Well, something weird has been happening to me the past couple of days. My Diet Coke has started tasting a little like Root Beer. I think it was the lord, planting a suggestion in my mind! It got me to thinking: root beer has zero caffeine! The reason my psychiatrist wants me to stop drinking Diet Coke is because of the massive amount of caffeine I’m consuming (46mg caffeine in each can). So, today I bought four 12-packs of A & W Diet Root Beer on sale, and I’m having my first glass now. It’s completely satisfying! I think I can do this! I left 2 Diet Cokes in the fridge for when I get a headache, but replaced all the rest with A&W. I know there are those who will say it’s still bad for me, but at least it’s not AS bad as what I was doing. Baby steps!

A friend of mine drinks caffeine-free Diet Coke. Have you tried it?

they have caffeine free diet coke, and other diet drinks.. I'm proud of you your doing good and baby steps lead to bigger changes than we think they do...I cut soda out completely but sometimes I get headaches after 6mo of not drinking them so I take a few drinks of my hubby's big red I know it's not good to do but it helps me and I log it into my calories and carb intake so that's not a daily thing but my addiction to bread is what I want to work on even more than I have oh and the chocolate I've been having since it's almost time for aunt flo in another couple days and the week before she arrives I crave chocolate so bad but once she's gone I'm not eating it much ....

Definitely an improvement. By the way, Diet A&W is awesome. No sugar, no caffeine. I have one of them when I want a soft drink. Still not health good but not full of caffeine and sugar which is much worse than artificial sweetener.

Soda is terrible for you! Start drinking water and you’ll feel great.

That’s a start! You can do this! Try bringing it down to one a day. I started a couple of weeks ago limiting to one DC per day and, I have been 3 days that I haven’t had any. Also limiting to one cup of coffee per day. Headache has been less than I expected, and it is almost gone today. My husband gave DC up years ago, and feels great!

Hey, any improvement is a push in the right direction. As long as you feel good about the changes and moves you make, that's all that matters.

I have a soda once a week, down from 2 a day.

ChunkyMonkeyHere, I had tried the Coke Zero Products several years ago and didn’t care for them. I should try it again. saranchrisriley, bread is also another major addiction for me! Today I had 3 or 4 King’s Hawaiian rolls, 2 Thomas’ English muffins, and a slice of toasted Dave’s Killer Good Seed Bread (All with butter. Plus, Peanut Butter & Jelly on the English muffins!) I’m drinking a third (and final) Diet Coke tonight because I keep getting headaches. Going to go back to bed now. Three cans (down from 12) is still good progress.

Hey Debbie. They have Caffeine Free Diet Coke in addition to Coke Zero. Just worth a try if the Root Beer wears out on you! I hope you find a good solution for long term!

Debbie, you mention the bread addiction. I don’t know if you have those dips in blood sugar a couple of hours after eating a high carb meal—they make one hungry again, sluggish, unable to focus. I used to have them. They're gone once I shifted my diet away from sugar and these refined flour carbs to protein and fiber. This was also important for my older teen with ADHD. She is now more careful and tries to eat protein for breakfast (plain yogurt and fruit, or eggs, or even a nutty protein bar on the way to school) because she sees how her focus, mood, and energy improve. Pancakes or waffles but with yogurt, etc. I wanted to mention this because I think your grandson has ADHD. I got the advice to steer my kid away from carbs toward higher protein meals, especially for breakfast, from a psychiatrist specializing in ADHD.

Agnes Z, I don’t have the drops in blood sugar after I have a high-carb meal, unless it includes a piece of Pecan Pie, or something equally sweet. About 2 hours after eating it, I break out in a sweat, get shaky and weak. My grandson is being evaluated for ADHD. He’s seen the doctor and we’ve filled out all the parenting and teacher evaluations. He has an appointment with a Behavioral Therapist tomorrow, and she will send a report to the pediatrician, who will make the final diagnosis. It’s good to know that if it IS ADHD, that there is something as simple as diet to help control it. Thanks.

Debbie, I didn’t mean to imply that something as simple as diet can control ADHD. Maybe for some it can. My daughter has medication for it. Diet is just something that helps. I was skeptical at first that protein at breakfast would help my kid, but it did. It might not be the case for your grandson if he gets diagnosed with it but just passing it along as something that might be helpful.

They are both bad. you're accepting your addiction. Diet coke to root beer. have you ever tried not buying it? switching to water after a few days, your taste buds do change!
