Okay- I had to give in tonight and let the local smoke house help me out. Half a Reuben, half a pulled pork on brioche bun, side of fries, and three bacon wrapped jalapeños poppers with sweet chili sauce. And, yes I ate all of it 😋

For the record I was over 3000 cals in the hole and ready to eat my cat. And, yes I feel much much better 😁

My friend- it did me dirty. My stomach did not do well going from 55 grams to 135 grams of fat. I’m paying the price this a.m My 50 year old body is definitely letting me know it doesn’t have the bandwidth for high fat foods anymore 🤢

When I eat like that my body lets me know it's not ok, one way or another! It does look yummy though!🩷

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling poorly it's quite unfortunate. 😔 I think it's probably an autoimmune thing though more than an age issue I've heard a lot of people say that they can no longer tolerate large amount of fat or fatty foods or fried foods either I also have this issue and have for a few years myself. 😓I've noticed oily foods, soft cheeses, hard to digest meats such steak, and foods that are termed rich (cream sauces etc), typically make me feel quite ill normally within hours of eating them so the holidays will make me quite ill. I even portion myself I tried to space the foods between days, but I often find that I make myself ill even so. Cream cheese is normally my biggest enemy so those poppers that we were talking about yes I have made myself ill on poppers many times cheesecake is another enemy of mine that gets me; events like my birthday and Christmas time are normally times that I'm sick. And I'm so good about talking myself into it too I'm like "oh Leah as long as you only eat 2 to 4 oz of steak you'll be fine as long as you spread it out with two or three days in between eating the meals you'll be fine" guess what... I'm not, but I let myself be talked into it anyways, 😆.talked into it and the meals are free and oh do I love free food especially when it's delicious and so the cycle continues.

Diana1234, when it comes to the meat my body doesn't give me any cues for days until the issue is compounded and too late to be corrected. The cream cheese comes to very much quicker but it doesn't really matter either way as I'm aware of the issue. And as an adult I should be more responsible I'm not a child anymore I know what's happening. No this is more like an alcoholic giving in to a desire I know what I'm doing I'm very aware when I put that food in my mouth the ultimate response of my body will have I'm making a choice... it's just delicious! No I'm making my bed and I should have to sleep in it. ^^

Thanks Diana and Leah - actually, in this case Leah may have a point. Keep in mind, I've been on this site for seven years. At 47-48 years of age, I was 112 lbs and my monthly surplus days were a running joke on FS. Your girl could take down 4800 cals in a day without blinking an eye. In fact, if you scroll wayeee back through my journal entries - you will see I'm sporting some monumental food babies. And, trust me my surplus days were epic and never "low fat". But, fast forward a couple of years and I'm on a new MS medication, which is known to cause nausea as one of the side effects. It wasn't fun trying to adjust to it in the middle of 70.3 training, but I have noticed since then that I just can't take down the amount of food I used too. I'm in a different boat then some. My metabolism is actually not as slow than most my age. I burn through calories quickly from endurance, but I have a considerable amount of muscle in both upper and lower body and those muscles like fuel and burn through glycogen quickly. This is part of the reason why it's difficult for me eat back the cals I burn and resort to surplus days. But, the high fat content is definitely a thing. Some people are really good with large amounts of fat even if it's occasional. But, my tolerance for it, like Leah's has definitely gone south. It might be autoimmune related or it might be the vumerity. Either way, it was delicious but I'll be ordering the chicken sandwich and a salad next time. Oh, and p.s., I'm not at my current weight because of those surplus days. I decided to increase my daily cals consciously in order to increase body fat because I was starting to lose muscle at 110-112 lbs and did not want to lose the muscle I worked so hard to put on.

this looks really good I would definitely eat it all and pay the price later though. the high fat thing doesn't work for me either. high carbs and protein minimal fats is what my body loves to run off of which is hilarious because it's not how I ate at all before fat secret aND I just thought everyone just always had stomach problems 🤣

Those crunchy foods.. and with sauces.. a real food party. I’m new here- what do you mean by the terms ‘surplus’ and ‘in the hole’ for calories? I go more by my weekly average vs my daily calorie goal- is that you’re referring to? Thanks and hope you’re feeling all better quickly.

Unity my ice cream explosion 10 days or so ago were similar. I was sick for a day and a 1/2 but of course i ate nearly 1/2 gallon of ice cream in 24 hours. So, clearly, not out of the woods with portion control for foods that are on my binge list. Sorry you felt like that tho. That’s not any fun at all. So good going down so bad paying the piper.

No worries YOH, I don't mind you accidentally calling me unity. That's a compliment :-) And, yes 1/2 gallon of ice-cream would do it. Especially, if it's been a while since you've had any dairy. People don't realize it, but lactose intolerance is somewhat of a natural phenomenon. Our ability to ingest dairy is dependent on a specific enzyme our bodies produce (lactase) that begins to lessen as we age. But, in the west we ingest far more of it and for longer durations so in many cases that enzyme continues to be produced to a greater or lesser degree depending on background and genetics. I've seen folks abstain from dairy for long periods of time and then try to eat ice-cream. It's never a pretty picture. But, I have to tell ya I think the same thing might apply to fat tolerance. Both my mom and I had similar experiences after this dinner and we both ate the same thing. Although, I cleaned my plate! It really was the sickly feeling one has if they ate too much deep fried food. We were both surprised, but then this is the first time either one of has been out to dinner since last year. Our diets are the same (since I do the cooking) and we are both very low fat eaters. Both of us have had our gall bladders removed as well so we don't have the apparatus that helps to manage the amount of bile needed to ingest fatty foods, which may have contributed. I also relate to OTB. We're both endurance athletes at the end of the day. And, rule of thumb is keep the carbs high (unless one is in a cut), keep the protein moderate to high (especially if strength training is involved), and keep the fat low. And, there are critical reason for that formula with regards too endurance, actually. But, like him I did not eat that way before my 92 lb. loss. There was a lot of fat in my food intake. And, its safe to say when I was having surplus days to the tune of 4800 cals when I was 112 lbs, there was definitely some fat in those meals and I was never impacted this way. But, maybe I still had better tolerance back then because I was couching those surplus days 1-2 times a month just to keep some fat on this body. @CiCi- welcome to FS! Let me address your questions. I am one of those wierdo athletes that actually tracks how much I burn and how much I consume. Because, when I got into endurance it became very clear to me that properly fueling oneself for their training/and or challenge and event is a moving target but very critical to performance, surviving the event un-injured, and weight maintenance. Eat too little and we run the risk of bonking and incurring a DNF (Do not finish), eat too much or eat something our tummy doesn't want to digest, and we risk bringing up calories that our bodies desperately need to move the way we are moving. Same with hydration. Too much water without potassium, magnesium, and sodium and we can literally end up in a death bed. Also, gain to much body fat and performance is compromised. Too little body fat, performance and muscle is also compromised. So, even though nutrition is a moving target in terms of nailing down micro-nutrients and macro nutrients that work I personally feel it's absolutely essential to track CICO at this level of fitness. Not all athletes feel that way and that's fine. But, I want to ensure I'm seeing the best my body can bring since it's technically doing the work. So, now to answer your questions. "In the hole" simply refers to the amount of calorie I'm in deficit after I subtract what I ate from what I burn. I carry over that deficit amount to the next day. I've carried over my daily deficit amount since half iron man training, because I knew my bodyfat % was low (still is) and if there are ways I can fit in extra calories (without compromising training)- at least I have an idea of how many cals I have to work with. And, yes there's always a deficit to carry over with the exception of recovery days where I try to couch in more cals than I burn. I refer to those days as "surplus" calorie days, which just means I'm eating more than I burn or more than I usually eat. I try to keep those deficit cal amounts between 1600-2500 on the regular. But, I have a lot on my plate (no pun intended) so sometimes those deficit cals hit 3000 or above and I know I need to find a way to get more cals in. I hope that explanation helps.
