I spent my day planning the annual cutting-flower garden that I'm going to grow for the flowers for my daughter's Labor Day wedding. It was a fair amount of research about what to plant when. I've got my calendar all marked with planting dates, varieties and succession plantings. Then I went out and weeded and spread cow compost on four (of 12) raised beds to prepare them for planting. I ordered more seeds; they will arrive on Tuesday. According to my biodynamic calendar of planting by the planetary influences, Thursday is the optimal day for planting flowers. So, the ones that take all season to grow will go in then. It was a beautiful spring day here, and I was inspired by planning a massive planting of flowers, instead of most of my usual vegie garden. Since we don't eat many carbs anymore, I just don't need all the squash , potatoes, tomatoes and melons anymore, so I've got plenty of garden space for flowers! It's a hopeful and festive project, and a gift of love for my first born! There'll be several varieties of sunflowers, zinnias, dahlias, asters, celosia, rudbeckia, Nigella, etc. She asked for a farm flower theme, which is perfect for late summer. It will be fun to show up with all those flowers and do the arrangements! Happy garden thoughts kept me from thinking too much about food today, right?

How awesome!! I too worked all weekend outside cleaning up fence lines, an herb bed, weed eating and getting rid of the forever volunteer trees (wood behind my house). Veggie gardens were all in a couple weeks ago.

You must be further south, we had a frost last week. @ HCB - Not a Master Gardener, but I am a Horticulture teacher, though self taught. I've taken some classes, read a lot and been gardening for a long time. It's a never ending study and every season is different.

Update on the flower garden project. Well, it's still spring here, but I've planted up my rows with seeds and seedlings. Gardening is such an act of faith and hopeful imagination. AND a bit of a crap shoot! I've got rows and rows of seeds underground out there waiting for the annual miracle to happen. By August I expect a riot of colorful blooms. In the meantime there'll be a lot of watering and weeding, mulching and general fussing. I did end up planting tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage and peas etc. It's a smaller veggie garden and about 2/3 in flowers -- So, now we'll see what grows!

Right now it's a nearly bare geometry of composted rows, so the blooms are in my imagination; in the genetics of the planted seeds and hopefully in the future!
