A very interesting article on metabolism on whether or not people have a slow metabolism.

A few sections that stood out:

"On average, a woman’s resting metabolic rate is ~3% lower than a man’s of the same height and weight. This is mostly due to men having more lean body mass and less fat at any given body weight.

The menstrual cycle also affects RMR. Women can see a 5-10% increase in their resting metabolic rate during the luteal phase."

"Your brain, heart, liver, kidneys, and residual mass (skin, intestines, bones, and lungs) all fall under the fat-free mass umbrella and contribute to your resting metabolic rate.

In fact, your organs use more energy than your muscles do."

"The heavier you are, the higher your resting metabolic rate. There are variations in metabolic rate between people of the same age, sex, body size and body composition but these are very small and certainly not enough to justify a ‘slow’ metabolism."

"One study quantified the under-reporting between normal-weight and individuals with obesity and found normal-weight individuals under-reported by ~150 kcal/d while individuals with obesity under-reported by almost 600 kcal/d."

"And in a now-famous 1992 study, researchers investigated energy intake in self-proclaimed ‘diet-resistant’ individuals who failed to lose weight despite claiming to eat fewer than ~1200 kcal per day using doubly-labelled water.

The subjects were tested before the study to ensure there were no metabolic abnormalities. None of the subjects’ RMR was more than 10.4% below the predicted values.

The mean self-reported intake was ~1028 calories but the groups actual mean intake was ~2081 calories per day. The participants underreported their energy intake by ~47%"

That's why weighing/measuring and logging are so important if you're serious about losing.

"Here’s a review of a study by James Krieger of Weightology that found even dietitians misreport calorie intake. The results showed that the dietitians underreported their food intake by an average of 223 calories per day, while the non-dietitians underreported their intake by an average of 429 calories per day. Thus, while being a dietitian improves the accuracy of self-report of food intake, it does not eliminate the phenomena of underreporting. Yes, even people whose job involves dealing with these things on a daily basis aren’t immune to misreporting."

So that is why when a 230-pound man claims he averages 1800 calories and can't lose, I know better. He is simply not calculating correctly. Even dietitians do it.

^Like this British actress who was adamant she had a slow metabolism. Turns out she was under-reporting by almost 2,000 kcal.

From what I saw in myself, I was the ‘low’ person after 12 weeks of strict dieting. Now I’m at or just past the normal and hopefully will get even closer to the high end soon. I’m anal about logging everything as correctly as I can ;).

Diablo I saw a recipe the other day in a magazine that called for 2 tablespoons of blackberries.. so is that 2 big ones or 4 small or what. Ridiculous. And, very few cooking magazines or recipe books use volume because Americans don’t know the metric system

Yep, just weigh by the gram if you want accuracy, folks. Yw, Sohangry! Peeper, that is great to hear, that muscle mass is paying off!

Also, you can be well above that figure. For example, I am losing fat on 3k calories a day even though my RMR is supposed to be 1700. It depends on how active you are.

Love this post! I struggle so much with what my 'rmr' is, but I just set my mind straight that I need to simply just stay within my calorie deficit and keep it pushing, LOL.

TIL about doubly labeled water. Cool! Thanks!

Interesting. Definitely something to think about. Even with some underreporting tracking helps. I keep telling one of co-workers to track, she has the FS app on her phone. She doesn't. Can't figure our why she isn't losing weight as she is trying the healthy meals (she is mostly cutting portions and :cutting back on sweets" and deserts) but she snacks on things like sour patch candy and those 100 calorie portioned snacks.

Oh the candy does ya in! I believe most of my issues were pop and candy. I’m eating about what I did as I gained weight as far as meals. I’m just eating most of them at home. Pop is now diet and candy like that is a rare one serving treat. I can sit and eat the whole bag!

I think I recall the actress you reference. She reminded me of the folks arguing on MFP then you'd view their diary and their intake was way off. They'd leave dressings out, forget to add (calories) butter when they fried an egg, or just used incorrect entries. On here (FS Land), my favorite entries recently are people posting diary entries for vegetables where the fat is higher then the carbs. Love the inaccuracies.
