Day 1 of a planned 5 days of mostly ‘no solid food’ fasting

I went to the gym and did some weight lifting yesterday. However, I did not try to 'lift my max'. I only did my squat #200 and deadlift #230 when I know I can squat #240 and deadlift #300.

To hit my max levels I have to hit the gym 2-3 times a week for weeks and lift in that range. I also need to be sufficiently 'carbed up' because these lifts require 'sufficient glycogen'. I simply cannot do 11 mile runs during this period (this depletes glycogen) - - This is where I found a huge problem

(1) I am 'carbing up' - this is not good for me.
(2) I am not doing long runs - mentally this is not making me happy
(3) Deadlifing #300 is *hard* and *hurts* - I am really not 'enjoying myself'

After reflecting on all this, I had to ask myself "What am I doing and why?"

😎 Life is Good! Have a great day everyone!

Sometimes, it's just the time of year. For me at least. I look forward to this time of year but when it's here sometimes it's too cold to get motivated to get moving. And it's the time of year where I eat "heavier" meals, like roast and stews, etc. Don't know if you are experiencing any of that.

Curious where you will go with that question. But, it does seem like you're on a new years roll, run, gym. I'm pretty disciplined with exercise, however, I know in the past when I was trying to get my mojo going, my mind can come up with lots of resistance to exercise. After I get a few months into it, then my mental protestations wane, I think, mainly because I start to experience the immense benefits, physically, mentally, sleep, even digestion. However, I have learned to listen to my body and not push things.

btw, I don't think the bbcode works in android mobile app.

@Fritzy 22, @rgaDawg - Yeah I guess my mind is basically 'all over the place' at this point :) Yeah *all* the BBCode and hyperlinks don't show up on the mobile app :(

Maybe just take is slower on the exercise, shorter runs, less weight. But, instead opt for regularity, consistency. You can increase distance later. Just get some runs in to build up the habit. Just an idea.

Rga the bbcode works on my computer as I played with it one day. It doesn't work for comments and of course I haven't tried it on my cell. Thanks Adef for sharing this!

Yep, works on PC, but not on mobile. Which is fine for formatting, just doesn't show up on mobile, but if you use a Named Link, that will be missing. I'll need to remember to use the full link.

@rgaDawg - I *really* love the runs. I'm willing to 'sacrifice' weight lifting for it. I think where I am going with this is to go for 'happiness' rather than doing the 'correct' thing.

Yep, do what makes you happy. Anything else won't last. Cycling is meditative for me, it also makes my body happy. I've read articles that cyclists who don't do upper body work aren't doing balanced exercise, but - wtf, I don't go to the gym, don't know if I ever will, doesn't sound like my idea of fun, enjoyable.

Have you considered just doing some at home strength training exercise that uses your own bodyweight ? Basic push ups pulls ups body planks lunges ? For good muscle health no one says you have to dead weight 300 lbs. Well maybe some people lol.

Stick with what makes you happy 😃. I stopped lifting heavy in December as my hips were killing me. Has made a difference....I was taking Motrin everyday!!

@crazycatchick - The heavy lifting did give me good results, but, you're right I don't need to continue that to maintain.

@srossca - 👍🏾😁

You probably already know this, but resistance is the key. More reps will provide a similar affect as more weight if you are maxing your effort output.

Adef.... I signed up for rotc back in late 70's. Our workout and training daily was running 5 miles, obstacle courses of climbing walls. we all were in best shape. no machines or weight lifting in a gym that isolated and building up isolated muscle one at a time. we do not use muscle that way. we use them all in concerete with each other all the time. i.e. me carrying a 40 lb bag of cat litter from the car up a flight of stairs engages legs, back, arms, back and torso. our efforts for strength training should do the same and engage use of muscle them all at the same time. i am envious of your running and wish i could do the same. all the best to you!

typos... sorry

I guess my point is we do not use muscle as an isolated item. Last spring I put down thousands of pounds of pavers in my courtyard that used all muscles at the same time.. This spring I will finish the project. In that project I use arm, back, abs, legs, torso in tandem with each other all at the same time.r. Isolating just biceps, triceps, back, etc in any work out does not train me to use them all at the same time. My daily cardio and strength concentrates on using them all at the same time. That is how I use muscle. I can't imagine needing to ever lift 300 lbs or leg press 180 so my fitness fits what I need to stay fit and healthy. Hope this makes some sense.
