Here's an excerpt on Vitamin D. Most Americans are deficient, especially in winter. It affects our immune response, but this is about obesity and depression. It's a common and inexpensive supplement.

More recently, the effect of vitamin D supplementation on symptoms of depression in overweight and obese persons was studied (Jorde, Sneve, Figenschau, Svartberg, & Waterloo, 2008). For participants who participated in this clinical trial, they were randomized into one of three groups where vitamin D (20,000 IU cholecalciferol) was given twice per week, once per week, or not at all (placebo) for one year. All participants also received calcium supplementation (500 mg daily). Findings indicated that for the two groups that received vitamin D, there was a significant improvement in depression (using the Beck Depression Inventory) which was more pronounced in those with higher depression at baseline. Limitations of the study were that only overweight and obese adults were included, and participants did not have to have depression at baseline to participate.

I’m so glad to see that some of you are really taking note of the value of good nutician to not only our physical health but our mental health. For those of you who live in the colder states with less winter sunshine really benefit from vitamin D supplementation. Those of us who live in the sinshine states are now becoming vitamin D deficient for another reason—— we have become too diligent in the wearing of SUNSCREEN, and even make up products that have had SPF added. There is a legitimate mental health condition called SAD (SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER) that is caused by lack of sunshine. They make special light bulbs, like grow lights for plants, that helps treat this disorder caused by lack of skin exposure to sunshine and the depletion of vitamin D.
